Meet Roman Fury: Tyson Fury’s 25-year-old brother who is set to make his boxing debut next month after losing six stone

A few months on from Tyson Fury announcing his retirement from boxing, fight fans are still hoping he will return to the ring for an undisputed clash with the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua 2. In the meantime, they’ll have to make do with another of the Fury clan stepping into the squared circle, as his brother Roman is set to debut in Blackpool on September 10. Roman is the latest Fury to join the professional boxing ranks@romanfuryy - instagram Unlike Tyson or his younger brother Tommy, Roman does not have an amateur background or any real experience in the sport whatsoever. “If it’s nothing else it’s a story,” Roman told VIP Boxing. “How many people do you know that jump into it right at the deep end, no experience or nothing, and do well for themselves? But that’s the challenge and I like a challenge. “I’ve always been messing around on the pads with my dad and my brothers from a young age, but actually sparring and fighting, I don’t have that much experience.” Roman revealed that he only really started taking the sport seriously when the lockdown left him without work and several stone heavier than usual. I was 20 stone, a real mess. Lockdown happened, I had no work, I was eating crap, playing on the Xbox, and I had no life whatsoever. “Tommy invited me down to train with him, I had a couple of sessions and I started getting into it. I trained more and more until it went from training twice a week to six times a week and the weight came off, the confidence grew. “It’s not just a physical thing, it’s a mental thing as well. It’s turned my life around completely.” Roman will be fighting on VIP Boxing’s card at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Saturday, September 10. He’ll prepare for his debut with trainer Jimmy Harrington, who also works with former Commonwealth featherweight champion Isaac Lowe.
