Match #1. Will Ospreay vs. Buddy Matthews
In a nice touch, highlight videos of both wrestlers are shown in PIP during their entrances. Both guys trade their finishes early and we reset a few missed high kicks by Ospreay. Tieres takes Matthews to the floor and Ospreay follows up with a plancha. Snap mare by Mathews and a kick to the back, one to the face, and a running knee gets two. Double crossbody in the middle of the ring and both guys are down. Handspring back kick by Ospreay, who follows up with a Phenomenal Forearm for two. Ospreay runs into a boot in the corner but sets Matthews up for Cheeky Nandos, but Matthews gets free and hits a rising knee to the back of the head. Back suplex into a lung blower by Matthews and a tope con hilo! Matthews goes up top and drills Ospreay with a Meteora! Two count. Mathews looks for a pump handle on the apron but Ospreay comes back with a superkick. Big knee by Matthews! Superkick by Ospreay! Ospreay thinks OsCutter but Matthews catches him and tosses him into the announcer’s desk. Matthews sets Ospreay up in the corner on a chair and follows up with a running knee to the face. Matthews tries it again but runs into a superkick. OsCutter off the barricade! Matthews makes it in by the nine count and Ospreay goes coast-to-coast with a dropkick! OsCutter by Ospreay! One, two, no! Ospreay drops the elbow pad and Matthews ducks the Hidden Blade, instead popping Ospreay up into a big knee. FIGHTING SPIRIT! RUNNING BLADE! Two count. Kawada kicks by Ospreay and a brutal chop to the chest. Back flip enziguiri by Ospreay. Matthews blocks the OsCutter and hits an inverted GTS! Curb stomp by Matthews! Two count. Ospreay flips out of a powerbomb, holds on.. Styles Clash! One, two, no! Ospreay again lines it up… Hidden Blade! One, two, three!
Winner: Will Ospreay
Rating: ***3/4. Yeah I could have easily gone for another 5-7 out of this one, but it didn’t really need it. Excellent opener, Buddy Matthews more than holds his own, and Ospreay continues his string of Bryan Danielson-level performances.
Ospreay takes the mic and says let’s give it up for Buddy Murphy… whoops, Matthews. Crowd chants for Buddy. Ospreay says he’s wrestled Brody and Buddy, and they don’t need to follow any leader. Hopefully this isn’t the last time they meet, and if Buddy needs a man in his corner… Ospreay is your guy.
Private Party is here and apparently there’s a club at the top of the stage. Private Party and some females are drinking champagne, and Kassidy says they made history last week, defending the championships on Max for the first time. Kassidy has been interrupted by The Hurt Syndicate. MVP says he invented this, and he proposes a toast to Private Party. Bobby says here’s to the Hurt Syndicate…taking those tag team titles. Private Party look on in anger as MVP and company hit the ring.
Match #2. Bobby Lashley w/ The Hurt Syndicate vs. Mark Briscoe
Lashley in control early with a twisting dominator for a two count. MVP joins the commentary table for this one, by the way. Briscoe comes off the top with a tomahawk chop but Lashley catches him and dumps him with an overhead belly-to-belly. Briscoe rolls out to the floor and Lashley follows up with a running shoulder block and another suplex. Back from commercial and Lashley sends Briscoe crashing to the floor with a running back elbow. Briscoe rolls underneath the ring and Lashley follows, but Briscoe jabs him with the steel chair. Briscoe uses the chair as a springboard back inside the ring and takes flight with a somersault plancha to Lashley on the floor. Lashley is reeling and Briscoe comes off the top with a twisting moonsault on the floor! Back in the ring, sliding lariat by Briscoe and the Froggy Bow hits! One count! Briscoe charges in the corner but Lashley gets the boot up. Twice. Spear by Lashley. Dominator. Hurt Lock is in and Briscoe goes out.
Winner: Bobby Lashley
Rating: **3/4. This was mostly Mark Briscoe looking Bobby Lashley look big and strong here, and Mark Briscoe can do anything. Hurt Syndicate are in business.
Match #3. Casino Gauntlet for #1 AEW World Heavyweight Championship Number One Contender
Jay White is number one. Hangman Page is number two. Shoulder block by Page and some chops by White. Both guys trade finisher attempts a bunch and White chops him in chest. Superplex by White. Wheeler Yuta is number three. Yuta walks right into a Bladerunner but Hangman breaks it up before the three. Hangman drops White over the top and then hits a double jump lariat to Yuta. One to Page. Swerve is number fo–wait, no, it’s Ricochet with a take on Swerve’s music. Springboard clothesline to Page, suicide dive to White, crossbody to Page, and a double jump moonsault gets two. Commercial break time and back from break, Adam Cole is number five. Pump kick to White and an enzuguiri to Ricochet. Superkick to Yuta. Springboard by Ricochet but he walks into a superkick from Cole. ADAM COLE, BAYBAY. Cole thinks about a Panama Sunrise on Ricochet and gets it! One, two, no! Daniel Garcia is number six. Twist and shout to Cole and mounted punches in the corner to Cole. Now to Cole and Yuta. Now to Cole, Yuta, and Page in the corner. Yuta pokes the eyes and Garcia gets wiped out with a clothesline. Powerhouse Hobbs is number seven. Hobbs just throws everyone around forever. Exploders to White, Cole, Garcia, and Page. Excalibur said maybe Hangman can match Hobbs power-for-power… what? Back from another commercial and Hobbs body slams the world but gets drop toe hold into the middle turnbuckle. Roderick Strong is number eight. Back brakers to everyone and a running knee in the corner to Hobbs. Ricochet kicks out the leg of Strong but here’s Garcia and Cole to pull him off. Garcia and The Undisputed Kingdom work over Ricochet, but Hobbs depleted everyone with a pair of clotheslines. Sick kick to Ricochet. Discus lariat to Strong. Tajiri elbow to Page. Lance Archer is number nine. Archer choke slams Yua on the apron and White in the ring. Big boot to Cole and he choke slams Strong on top of him. Crossbody by Ricochet but Archer catches him, and throws him at Hobbs. Hobbs throws him back. Snap powerslam to Archer. Archer is up with a Black Hole Slam to Hobbs! Kyle O’Reilly is number ten. Triple team to Page now with the UK taking over. Jeff Jarrett is number eleven! Yuta cuts Jarrett off and beats on him, sending him to the back. Hobbs takes out the entire UK with a shoulder block and proceeds to escape a Black Out, sending Archer to the floor. O’Reilly chops the legs out but gets spinebustered by Hobbs and that’ll do it!
Winner: Powerhouse Hobbs
Rating: ***. Really enjoy the concept but this may have been the weakest of all of the Casino Gauntlets. Hobbs winning is a nice change of pace and the action was fine, but it felt like there were some huge names in here and a bit of a let down.
