This post isn’t to shit on the Flyers. Just a little bit of perspective. It was something I was working on before leaving for vacation* and didn’t get to post it after the Panthers beat the Oilers in Game 7.

Since 1975, 20 NHL teams have now won the Stanley Cup. 10 have won it multiple times. Combine those two together and the line is “20 NHL teams have won the Stanley Cup 48 times since the Flyers’ last title.” It would be 49 times if not for the 2004-2005 lockout year.

Here’s the master list of teams that have hoisted the Cup since the Flyers last did it:

  1. Montreal Canadiens (6x)
  2. New York Islanders (4x)
  3. Edmonton Oilers (5x)
  4. Calgary Flames
  5. Pittsburgh Penguins (5x)
  6. New York Rangers
  7. New Jersey Devils (3x)
  8. Colorado Avalanche (3x)
  9. Detroit Red Wings (4x)
  10. Dallas Stars
  11. Tampa Bay Lightning (3x)
  12. Carolina Hurricanes
  13. Anaheim Ducks
  14. Boston Bruins
  15. Chicago Blackhawks (4x)
  16. Los Angeles Kings (2x)
  17. Washington Capitals
  18. St. Louis Blues
  19. Vegas Golden Knights
  20. Florida Panthers

In the time period since the Flyers last won the Cup, the only other teams not to win it are the Sharks, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Senators, Blue Jackets, Canucks, Kraken, Wild, Coyotes, Predators, and both iterations of the Jets. Obviously a number of those franchises didn’t even exist in 1975, or moved from other cities, like Hartford, Atlanta, and Quebec. They haven’t had the same amount of time to win a title because they simply were not around, but on the contrary, the Panthers are one of seven teams added to the NHL after the Flyers’ last title that won a Cup before Philly could do it again. The others are the Oilers, Whalers (Hurricanes), Nordiques (Avalanche), Lightning, Ducks, and Golden Knights.

All told, it’s a pretty poor list to be part of. Some of those are small market teams with small fan bases who care maybe 1/10th as much as Philly fans. If you’re the Flyers, Leafs, Sabres, and Canucks, you should be winning a Cup before the damn Ducks and Panthers.

Here’s one more stat:

Since 1975, the Flyers, Leafs, Sabres, and Canucks are 0-11 in the Stanley Cup Final. At .250, the Flyers’ winning percentage in the Final is the worst among teams that have been there at least five times in history.

*Asheville, North Carolina: great beer, great hiking – reminded me of a smaller Austin, Texas, but up in the hills. It was slightly more crusty and raw than imagined, basically if you dropped parts of Fishtown or Kensington into the mountains but surrounded them with quality food and a brewery on every corner
