Derek Jeter turns 50 today. Ay caramba.

Derek Jeter debuted with the New York Yankees shortly before my fifth birthday, so since I was more taken with Barney and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers before then, I have essentially never known the Yankees without him. Today, the Hall of Famer and former captain turns 50 years old. I don't normally get blown away by birthday milestones because the ol' slog to rigor mortis rolls on for all of us and has no mercy. But Derek Jeter turning fifty?! That is something. For some reason, I have a memory of his idol, Dave Winfield, turning 50 the year that he entered the Hall of Fame, and I remember thinking, "Wow! Now there's a statesman of the game."

Now, Jeter is exactly that. Man. Happy birthday, Jeets.

Today on the site, Casey will discuss the Yankees' recent cold stretch and how facing adversity is less about merely overcoming and more about discovery. Sam will cover the Rivalry Roundup, Matt will revisit some of Jeter's heady days with the 1999 Diary entry, and David consider the same Mets team that the Yanks will play tonight as an admittedly unlikely trade deadline partner. Later on, Andrés will offer his own reflections on Jeter turning 50, and Nick S. will share his concerns over Carlos Rodón's fastball.
