Carlos Rodón named Opening Day starter; Giancarlo Stanton also dealing with calf issues; Yankees kept hold of Will Warren despite struggling in 2024, now hope for big 2025.
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: With Gerrit Cole out of action and Max Fried lineup up for the second game of the season, the Yankees officially named Carlos Rodón the Opening Day starting pitcher. Rodón will look to build off of a solid rebound from his second season in pinstripes, and though outside circumstances led to his name being called for the first game of the year he's honored to get the task.
NJ.com | Max Goodman: We've known that the tennis elbow that Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with will keep him out to start the season, but as it turns out, that's not the only thing he's dealing with during this spring training from hell. While not as serious as his elbow issues, Stanton has also had a "chronic" calf injury. He has returned to Yankees camp and the team thinks he may be able to resume baseball activities soon, but his injury issues will probably sideline him for a while to start the regular season.
NJ.com | Jimmy Hascup: With all the injuries the Yankees' pitching staff has dealt with already, Will Warren will likely play an important role to start the season. In making his MLB debut last year, Warren struggled. Some teams tried to use that as an opportunity to buy low on him in a trade this offseason, but the Yankees kept hold of the decently rated prospect and will be hopeful that he can translate this nice spring into regular season action.
