Patrick Dumont badly explains Mavericks' Luka Doncic trade

In the six weeks since they shockingly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, things have somehow gotten even worse for the Dallas Mavericks, who are now in danger of missing the play-in altogether. Kyrie Irving (and possibly Anthony Davis) is out for the year; meanwhile, Doncic has found his stride with the Lakers, turning them into one of the most dominant teams in the league in recent weeks.

The trade was orchestrated by Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, but fans were quick to point out that the team ownership, led by majority owner Patrick Dumont, would also likely have had to sign off on the deal.

Recently, Dumont spoke on what went into the puzzling decision.

“Tough decisions are never easy,” said Dumont, per TREC Dallas. “Part of leadership is looking at risk, and looking at all of the factors of a decision, and being willing to act at that time, and look to the long term… after the trade deadline we had the best record last year. We got to the championship and didn’t win… We looked at our trajectory and realized we did not get better.”

Clearly, trading the franchise player is the appropriate step to take in such a scenario.

A complete 180 for the Mavericks

Less than a year ago, the Mavericks appeared to be one of the brightest teams in the NBA, fresh off of a Finals appearance in Luka Doncic’s age 25 season and with Kyrie Irving playing some of the best basketball of his career.

Fast forward to the present day and the Mavericks find themselves in arguably the worst position of any franchise in the NBA when it comes to future prospects. There’s a real likelihood that Irving will miss some or all of next season due to the ACL injury, and it’s unclear whether Anthony Davis by himself at this stage of his career is good enough to put a team on his shoulders.

Of course, the major story is and always will be Doncic, who was thought to be on the short list of names in the NBA who were truly untradeable. However, the Dumont family had other ideas.
