Mavericks insider provides important Anthony Davis injury update

The 2024-25 campaign is shaping up to be a lost one for the Dallas Mavericks. But as things stand, they are still in position to make it to the play-in tournament as the 10th seed in the Western Conference. Considering the Mavericks’ injury woes, and the possibility that they run out of healthy players, there is a chance that they call upon Anthony Davis to make his much-anticipated return after suffering a groin injury.
The Mavericks recently assigned Davis to their G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends, to get some 5-on-5 work in, hinting at a potential return to the NBA lineup in the near future. But according to NBA insider Marc Stein, Davis for sure won’t be making his return quite yet on Wednesday night when the Mavericks battle against the Indiana Pacers.
“Anthony Davis is not in contention to play against the Pacers. He still has more on-court work to do,” Stein said, via the DLLS Sports account on X (formerly Twitter).

It’s not a matter of whether or not Davis is willing to return for the Mavericks, Stein added. However, given that the rest of season outlook for the Mavericks is quite bleak in the aftermath of the season-ending Kyrie Irving injury, it may not be the best idea for the Mavs to get him back out on the court.
“Anthony Davis really wants to play. There’s no question about that. He wants to come back before this season ends. Now, does that mean he will? That remains a TBD. There are people close to the situation that are not convinced that him coming back is a good idea. They’re not gonna let him on the court unless he proves that the injury he has is sufficiently healed enough for him to play,” Stein added.
It might be time for the Mavericks to pull the plug on the season
What a difference a year makes for the Mavericks franchise; from making it all the way to the NBA Finals in 2024, they have fallen to the fringes of the playoff picture, and to top it all off, decided to trade Luka Doncic, under the guise of conditioning concerns, for Anthony Davis, stripping the team of the bright future it seemed certain to have.
With Kyrie Irving out for the foreseeable future, it will be difficult for the Mavericks to compete in the coming years, let alone this season. So even though everything that can go wrong has already gone wrong for the Mavs, they better not tempt fate even further by risking Davis’ health.
