Mavericks get dunked on by Southwest Airlines for baffling Luka Doncic trade

Things have somehow gotten even worse for the Dallas Mavericks since they shockingly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in early February. The Mavericks now seem unlikely to even make the play-in this year with the news of Kyrie Irving’s recent ACL tear, and it remains to be seen whether Anthony Davis will return to the lineup at all this year.
The trade of Doncic drew a wrath of criticism from all corners of the sports world, and apparently beyond it. Recently, Southwest Airlines has been in a bit of a public relations crisis of its own after announcing that its longstanding free checked bag policy would be going out of effect, and in managing the turmoil, they threw the Mavericks under the bus on an Instagram post.
“It’s not like we traded Luka,” wrote the company on Instagram, per Sasha Richie of The Dallas Morning News.
A baffling trade by the Mavericks
Less than 24 hours after the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers, the Grammy Awards poked fun at the debacle when Jim Gaffigan appeared instead of host Trevor Noah, announcing that Noah had been traded to Dallas.
That was just one of the many examples of the scope of the trade and just how baffling it truly was, even to those who don’t necessarily follow the sport closely.
In order to begin to justify trading their franchise player, the Mavericks were going to win at least one, if not both, of the next two NBA championships, and it’s sure looking like this year’s is already off the table, with Irving out for the year and Davis looking less and less likely to return from his own injury, sustained during his very first game in a Mavericks uniform.
Meanwhile, Doncic has overcome a slow start to find his footing in a Lakers uniform and has Los Angeles looking like a juggernaut as the playoffs roll around.
All told, things could be better in Dallas.
