The Miami Heat haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory over the past few weeks; they entered their Sunday night clash against the Charlotte Hornets on a 10-game losing streak, and they needed major efforts from some of their best players, including Andrew Wiggins, to stop the hemorrhaging. And what a huge performance indeed they got from Wiggins, who put up his best game of the season, exploding for 42 points on 16-21 shooting from the field in a much-needed 122-105 victory for the Heat.

Wiggins has had his fair share of ups and downs ever since the Heat acquired him in the Jimmy Butler trade, and on Sunday night, he showed how explosive he can be, scoring-wise, when he has it going. And in having his excellent 42-point night, the 30-year-old forward made a bit of history.

In addition to having 42 points, Wiggins also had five dimes and six made triples. In recording that stat line, he became just the second player in Heat franchise history to tally 42 points, five assists, and nail six triples in the same game, joining Tim Hardaway Sr. as the only players in that exclusive club.

Over the past few weeks, the Heat have been stuck in such a deep rut that it wasn’t quite clear how they were going to get back on track. The team has been in such a mess all season long, that such a heroic performance from Wiggins was needed. It sure helped that they faced the Hornets, a team that is also has been facing an uphill battle all season long.

The 2024-25 season has long been a lost one for the Heat, but a performance like this from Wiggins should give Miami some hope that they can bounce back quickly from a nightmare campaign.

The Heat were going toe-to-toe with the Hornets for the first quarter or so of the ballgame, but Andrew Wiggins locked in during the second and third quarters, scoring 24 of his 42 points during the aforementioned periods.

Wiggins wasn’t the only one who had an excellent scoring game for the Heat. Tyler Herro also had himself a night, scoring 29 points, and the Heat shot 57.1 percent from the field on the night — a much-needed smooth-sailing offensive night after going through some scoring woes over the past few weeks.

The Heat will look to keep it going on Tuesday when they welcome back Jimmy Butler in their first matchup since pulling off the Wiggins-Butler trade with the Golden State Warriors in early February.
