Mexico City hasn’t been kind to the Nebraska native but he’s not holding any grudges.
March 29 was a difficult night at the office for Drew Dober who suffered a knockout loss to Manuel Torres in the opening round of their co-main event bout.
The 36-year-old has since reflected on the loss via social media where Dober gave props to his opponent and admitted making a mistake.
One fighter who didn’t get to make the walk was Joe Pyfer whose fight with Kelvin Gastelum was cancelled on the day of the event due to illness.
When Pyfer gave his thoughts on this past weekend, he trashed Mexico in the process whilst stating that he’s never going back in a controversial rant.
Drew Dober receives praise from the fans for classy post-fight statements
Joe Pyfer’s scathing comments about Mexico were unsurprisingly met with a harsh and surprised reaction from the fans.
The same cannot be said for Drew Dober’s latest statement after the fourth knockout loss of his 43-fight career.
He made reference on social media to the fact that on both occasions that he has fought in Mexico City, he has suffered a devastating loss having been submitting in the first round by Efrain Escudero at UFC 188 in 2015.
In a complete contrast to Pyfer’s comments about Mexico, the food and the altitude, Dober spoke about the great experiences that he has had when fighting at Arena CDMX even if the results haven’t gone his way.
“As much as I love Mexico City, it’s given me two of my most embarrassing losses of my career, haha. But the food and people are still the best. I’m happy and healthy and excited to be a stay at home dad for a while.”
Despite some calling for Dober to consider retirement in the immediate aftermath of the loss, his respectful comments over the following days were met with adoration from the fans.
“Nothing to be embarrassed about brother. You'll be back,” wrote one fan with many of the replies sharing the same sentiment of, “It’s part of the game you guys play, you're an awesome fighter Drew and the fans appreciate you.”
“Good to see! There’s still something pretty cool about wanting to keep fighting, moving forward with hands up ready to go after a loss like that. True warrior.”
Drew Dober has rallied from difficult positions in the past
Following his loss to Manuel Torres, Drew Dober is now without a win in his last three outings inside the Octagon.
Having competed 25 times under the UFC banner, he is certainly no stranger to overcoming adversity and that experience will help him in the coming months.
In fact, his time in the promotion could have been very different after his first five fights inside the Octagon saw him produce one win with three losses and a no contest.
He has since gone 12-8 at the highest level having faced the likes of Islam Makhachev, Renato Moicano, Beneil Dariush and Jean Silva.
