Know Thine Enemy: Bless You Boys

Last weekend, I was able to cross the last AL Central stadium—Comerica Park—off my MLB ballpark bucket-list. Some musings on the weekend jaunt...

  • The city of Detroit gets a bad reputation, but I don't think it's quite as dire as what you might believe—as long as common sense prevails. The city center seems thriving—great downtown theater/sports/bar district—but after a 6-or-7 block radius it gets progressively rougher. I never felt unsafe even walking 10-12 blocks to the ballpark from my Detroit River waterfront hotel—but I purposely did not go out after dark (when I feel things might be a different story). A few pics from around the Motor City:
  • Upon arriving to Comerica Park for last Saturday's doubleheader (that worked out nicely!), I took a lap around the park's exterior and interior. A lot of interesting things to admire (there was also a tiger carousel for the kiddies but I only got video of that):
  • Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Comerica Park—at least to me—was its honoring of Tigers history (Detroit being a 1901 inaugural American League franchise) all around the concourse in little pods...
  • The most visually iconic part of the stadium was its unique statues beyond dead-CF (they also have Willie Horton & Charlie Gehringer but I didn't get great pics of those)...
  • I attended both ends of the Saturday doubleheader sweep by the Twins (yay!) and also the bullpen choke-job on Sunday (blegh!). I had great seats just up from first base in the warm, 60-70 degree sunshine both afternoons—a true delight:
  • I also have to put in a quick plug for the Henry Ford Museum. As a history buff I've been in many museums across the U.S. and this one honestly may take the cake. So much more than "just cars" (even though those are great too!)—planes, trains, innovations, farm equipment, decades displays, U.S. history, etc. I could have spent an entire day there:

Overall, it was a great trip! I'll save my Official AL Central Ballpark Rankings for another post—as we have baseball to play this afternoon! The Minnesota Twins need to stack up series wins and they have the opportunity to do exactly that this after behind Louie Varland.
