Miguel Rojas Has Been Valuable Piece To Dodgers That Many Didn't See Coming

Miguel Rojas has been the ultimate team player for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last season, he served as the emergency everyday shortstop. This year, he willingly ceded the job to a former MVP who had never played the position as a professional.

When Mookie Betts went down with a fractured hand, Rojas was inserted as the everyday shortstop once again and is having one of the best seasons of his career. He has been the ideal replacement for Betts. His defense is superb and he is hitting better than ever.

Rojas is hitting more this year than in his previous seasons with the Dodgers. Up until Friday, his hitting correlated with Dodger victories. Los Angeles was 24-0 in games when he recorded at least one hit.

His current batting average of .291 and OPS of .775 would makr career-highs over a full season. The Dodgers are reaping the rewards of his hard work but manager Dave Roberts is proceeding with caution.

"I can't say enough about Miggy Ro," Roberts said. "I'm pushing him a little bit as far as playing time, but he's coming up big."

Rojas is playing so well that he is giving Roberts more to think about when Betts returns from the IL. Could the Dodgers move Betts to second base and keep Rojas at shortstop?

"I'm just blessed for the opportunity to be playing shortstop for this organization," Rojas said. "I was waiting for this opportunity. … I still think that I'm an everyday shortstop."
