Dodger manager Dave Roberts named Tyler Glasnow his Opening Day starter on Monday, and Glasnow followed that decision with his best Cactus League start yet.

The ace pitcher finished 5 1/3 hitless innings with eight strikeouts and one walk in a 6–4 Dodger win against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, retiring 16 of his 17 batters faced on 70 pitches. It was as excellent a tune-up start as the Dodgers could have asked for, with Glasnow set to pitch the first game of the Seoul Series and regular season opener on March 20 against the San Diego Padres.

"The command was great, the slider/curveball mix was really good," Roberts said. "They weren't getting a whole lot of good swings off. (He was) very efficient and, man, that's as good as that one gets. He's had a great spring."

Glasnow made two previous Spring Training starts before Tuesday, giving up four hits and one run in his first game on Feb. 24 and putting up three shutout innings against the Cleveland Guardians on March 1. He is the first Dodger starting pitcher to enter the sixth inning in Cactus League play, finishing his Spring Training with one earned run and 14 strikeouts over 10 innings pitched.

The right-hander will be making his second-career Opening Day start on March 20, first doing so for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on April 1, 2021.

Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani provided plenty of offensive support for Glasnow, going 3-for-4 and launching an opposite-field two-run home run to give the Dodgers a 6–0 lead in the sixth inning. Ohtani is 11-for-19 with two home runs, nine RBI and a 1.705 OPS in Cactus League play.

"Shohei was the star. Seeing what he can do with the baseball is pretty impressive," Roberts said. "His margin for error is just so great and even his misses are backside homers. (He's) pretty special."

Notes

  • Catcher Will Smith kicked off the scoring with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his second of the spring. He is 7-for-25 with three extra-base hits and has hit both home runs in his last three games.
  • Left fielder Teoscar Hernández hit his first Spring Training home run, a two-run shot as part of a four-run fifth inning for the Dodgers. He went 2-for-3 and recorded his third-straight multi-hit game.
  • Relief pitcher Daniel Hudson pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out two batters. The non-roster invitee has given up two earned runs in 5 1/3 Cactus League innings in his comeback quest after battling knee injuries and making three appearances for the Dodgers in 2023.
  • Wednesday marks the final Cactus League game for the Dodgers, with pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto scheduled to start against the Seattle Mariners. It will be Yamamoto's final Spring Training start before starting the second game of the Seoul Series on March 21.
  • Left-handed pitcher Justin Wilson has opted out of his contract with the Dodgers and has elected to become a free agent. Wilson was a non-roster invitee and appeared in four games, allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts in four innings.
