Gavin Lux: Dodgers Wanted To Put 2020 World Series Narrative To Rest

As Gavin Lux leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers after being traded to the Cincinnati Reds, he departs with two World Series championships in five seasons with the organization.

Lux was one of the Dodgers’ players most impacted by the funkiness of the 2020 season. He was optioned to the team’s alternate training site to begin the season and played in just 19 games. During the Dodgers’ road to their first World Series title since 1988, he only appeared in the National League Division Series where he had one plate appearance.

Nonetheless, Lux was as much a part of that team as anyone else due to the nature of that season. As such, he is able to provide insight into how the Dodgers felt during that 2020 season and having the validity of their World Series title questioned.

"I think it kind of bugs everybody. We were all in the same situation, and we still won that year. We were all in the same boat doing the same thing,” Lux recently said.

“I personally don’t think that’s the right narrative, but I think it kind of bugs everybody a little bit, that you don’t get the recognition that you’re deserved. If anything, I think it was probably harder to win that year. You want the full season one, though, just to get that whole narrative out of the window."

Lux’s desire to win a World Series in a full season in order to finally silence critics had to make the failures of the past few seasons extra frustrating. Fortunately for him and the remaining 2020 Dodgers, they were finally able to fulfill that wish in 2024.

For Lux, he was much more involved this time around as well. He played in 139 games for the Dodgers last season, batting .251/.320/.383 in 439 at-bats. He also played in 12 of the team’s 16 playoff games.

While his numbers were not overly impressive, Lux finished on a high note as his final at-bat as a member of the Dodgers was a sacrifice fly that tied the game and eventually led to taking a lead in the clinching Game 5 of the World Series.

Getting traded is never easy for a player, and it is even more difficult when they are dealt away from a team they won two World Series with.

While Lux expressed his optimism, he also was experiencing ‘a lot of emotions’ as he processed the fact he was leaving the organization that drafted him.
