Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts endured a tumultuous two weeks because of an illness that has plagued him. While Betts said doctors couldn’t give an exact diagnosis for his lingering stomach aggravation, there is speculation the 32-year-old dealt with a case of norovirus.

“Betts missed the Dodgers' opening two games in Japan last week while battling a stomach virus, one that is believed to be a case of norovirus, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly,” Jack Harris of The Los Angeles Times wrote.

Betts had lost a concerning amount of weight and was unable to hold any solid food down since becoming ill. The Dodgers had penciled the superstar in as the team’s starting shortstop for the first game of the Freeway Series Sunday, but Betts was a late scratch after having to vomit.

Just a few days later, Betts turned a corner in his recovery and was in the Dodgers lineup for Tuesday’s spring finale against the Los Angeles Angels.

Betts is making the unprecedented transition to shortstop, after winning six Gold Glove awards in right field. While the start of the 2025 season has not been ideal, the absence of Betts has highlighted the depth L.A. has accumulated.

The Dodgers are one day away from their home opener against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, and it appears Betts will be ready to compete in front of an electric L.A. crowd.
