BBWAA Awards 2024: Pat Murphy Named National League Manager Of The Year; Dave Roberts Receives Votes
Yesterday at 06:57 PM
Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers was named the 2024 National League Manager of the Year, winning the award for the first time in his career. Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dave Roberts received three votes for three total points that earned him an seventh-place finish.
Roberts garnered just three first-place votes in balloting, which was conducted prior to the playoffs beginning.
Finalists for 2024 NL Manager of the Year were Carlos Mendoza (New York Mets), Pat Murphy (Milwaukee Brewers) and Mike Shildt (San Diego Padres). Shildt finished in second place with 70 points, followed by Mendoza garnering 35 points.
Last year’s winner, Skip Schumaker, mutually agreed to part ways with the Miami Marlins, who went on to hire former Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough.
Roberts has proven himself as one of MLB’s premier managers and he’s making a case as the best of all-time.
Through nine seasons at the helm thus far, Roberts has guided to the Dodgers to the postseason each year, won eight NL West titles, four pennants and two World Series championships.
The only year the Dodgers haven’t won the NL West with Roberts as manager came in 2021, when they set a then-franchise record with 106 wins and finished just one game back of the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers proceeded to eliminate the Giants in the NL Division Series that October.
Over his managerial career, Roberts has a .627 winning percentage in the regular season and postseason winning percentage of .560. Among all MLB managers since 1950, no one has a higher winning percentage than Roberts.
New York Yankees skipper Aaron Boone is the next-closest active manager with a .584 win percentage. Roberts is also the sixth-winningest manager in the postseason history with 56 wins.
Among managers with at least nine seasons at the helm, only Vic Harris won a higher percentage of games (.663), which he accomplished from 1936-1948 in the Negro Leagues.
Roberts is on track to reach 1,000 career wins during the 2026 season as he is just 149 away. It’s feat that has only been accomplished by 66 managers in MLB history.
The modern record for managerial wins is held by Tony La Russa with 2,884 over a 35-year career. At his current pace, Roberts would win 3,309 games over 35 years.
The record for most wins by a manager his held by Connie Mack with 3,371 over a 53-year career from 1894-1950. To tie him, it would take Roberts 39 total seasons, or 30 more, at his current pace.
