Arguably the two best young players in the NBA today are Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard Luka Doncic and Minnesota Timberwolves phenom Anthony Edwards. Even though they play completely different styles, both have been extremely effective in their careers so far and even squared off in the Western Conference Finals last season with Doncic leading the Dallas Mavericks over Edwards and the Timberwolves to make the NBA Finals.

Being the best player comes with a lot of attention from opposing defenses, however, and earlier this season Edwards was really having trouble dealing with double teams. The star even admitted he was frustrated as he didn’t know what to do, but that no longer seems to be the case and one main reason why is because of the Lakers superstar.

Following the Timberwolves’ victory over the Denver Nuggets, their sixth consecutive win, Edwards was asked how he has improved dealing with double teams and the guard spoke about watching a lot of film, particularly of Doncic, via Timberwolves reporter Dane Moore:

“Watching film. Me and C. Hines just watch film on it all the time. See the open read like now I know the low man gonna be there, the corner gonna be open every time, then they gon start pre-rotating to the corner, the wing gon be open. Just little reads man, and then watching how other players that get doubled, watch how they attack it and watch how they try to manipulate it. Especially Luka, I watch a lot of Luka. Seeing how he attack the double-teams, even though we play a different pace, just seeing his strategy to beat the double-teams I think that helps me a lot.”

The best players study and learn from the best and pick up different tricks and that is the case here with Edwards. He is a top tier scorer, but still has some things to learn as far as passing and creating for others, which is something Doncic excels at so studying the Lakers guard has allowed him to grow significantly.

Edwards being able to recognize areas where he needs to improve and working hard to do so is a credit to his mindset and desire to be the best. There is a great level of respect between he and Doncic and there is no doubt the two will be going head to head the next time the Lakers and Timberwolves face off.

Luka Doncic takes accountability for poor performance in Lakers loss to Nets

Unfortunately for Luka Doncic, he struggled mightily in the Lakers’ most recent game, a loss to the Brooklyn Nets without LeBron James and three other rotation players. Doncic shot just 8-of-26 from the field while also committing five turnovers in a three-point loss.

Afterwards, Doncic took accountability for his performance, feeling that he should’ve helped more especially as role players like Dalton Knecht, Jordan Goodwin and Gabe Vincent stepped up with big performances. The Lakers guard added that he felt he should’ve made better decisions on beating the double-teams being sent his way by the Nets.
