Weather Channel legend Jim Cantore is "praying" that he's wrong about Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene, the tropical storm turned hurricane that is barreling toward Florida's Gulf Coast, could be the worst storm to hit the United States in more than a year. The hurricane could reach Category 4 or Category 5 status as it makes landfall in the United States, which could happen as soon as late Thursday afternoon, if not earlier. The wind speeds are reportedly reaching 100-plus miles per hour and the storm surges could be catastrophically bad, according to the forecasts.

As Hurricane Helene makes it way toward the United States, arguably the most famous meteorologist in the country is hoping his projection will be wrong.

NEW YORK - AUGUST 27: In this handout image provided by The Weather Channel, Jim Cantore an On-Camera Meteorologist for The Weather Channel, reports on Hurricane Irene from Battery Park in New York City August 27, 2011. While Hurricane Irene lost some of its power, it is still a dangerous storm with the centre of the hurricane is expected to reach New York City top on Sunday August 28th causing widespread damage and flooding with sustained winds of 85 mph as it begins to move up the Atlantic Seaboard. Cantore believes that this will be a historic storm and one of the worst to hit the United States in recent times.

"This will be a historic storm for many including southern Appalachia with flooding and wind damage. Pray I'm wrong, I want to be. Be safe all and protect your families and property as best you can," Cantore said Wednesday.

Cantore is currently set up in Tallahassee, Florida - worrying local residents.

Our thoughts remain with everyone in the storm's path as it approaches the United States on Thursday.

Stay safe out there, everyone.
