The world of Greco-Roman wrestling lost a beloved competitor this week as U.S. wrestler Alan Vera passed away. He was 33 years old.

According to TMZ Sports, Vera suffered a cardiac arrest episode in July and had to be hospitalized. Tragically, he suffered an "unexpected infection" and passed away on Monday.

USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said in a statement on Wednesday the organization is in mourning over Vera's passing.

"The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion, whose incredible life impacted so many within USA Wrestling and around the world," Bender said.

Vera's coach, Herb House, remembered him fondly for his "selflessness and dedication."

"Ever since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always ready to do anything for anyone in need," House said. "His selflessness and dedication have made a lasting impact on me."

Born in Cuba, Vera competed for the nation for many years, winning multiple medals in the Pan American Games and several more major tournaments besides. He emigrated to the United States in 2019 and began competing in wrestling for his adopted country. Vera attempted to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics but came up just short.
