The Cowboys Could Be Hiring A Coach Sooner Than You Think

The Dallas Cowboys are only 48 hours removed from firing head coach Mike McCarthy and formally beginning their head coaching search. But while they appear to be well-behind the other teams looking for a new coach, that may not be the case.

Earlier today it was reported that the Cowboys were scheduling an interview with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh for their first look at a head coaching candidate.

However, one report suggests that while Saleh may be the first to get announced publicly, the team has been putting in the work behind closed doors.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Cowboys are "further along in this process than it currently feels," with the team already putting out inquiries and requests to head coaching candidates to gauge their interest and schedules.

"The #Cowboys have already inquired about multiple head coach candidates and their schedules, per league source. They are further along in this process than it currently feels to the public. Jerry Jones is not a rookie at this," Anderson wrote.

NFL fans don't seem entirely convinced by this, particularly due to the last line about Jones.

"He may not be a rookie at it but he's not good at it. Already dragged his heels on figuring out what he was doing with McCarthy and his missed his opportunity to interview existing assistants still in the playoffs," one user replied.

"I have never heard more blatant Cowboys propaganda in my entire life," wrote another.

"He waited too long to be able to request ben Johnson.... he may not be a rookie at this but... he's also not very good," a third remarked.

It's a bit outrageous to believe that the Cowboys are as far along or further along than the teams that have had a full week's head start on them in the hiring process. The Patriots were able to interview and hire Mike Vrabel, arguably the top head coaching candidate available, in less than a week after firing prior head coach Jerod Mayo.

Unless the Cowboys have either violated rules or have a candidate in mind that literally no other team is considering, it will be very surprising if they wind up being one of the next couple of teams to hire a coach.

Then again, you never know what to expect from Jerry Jones, and the mutual interest between the team and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is likely more than idle gossip.

How long do you think it will take for Dallas to hire a new head coach?
