A promising season for Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen has come to an abrupt end following an injury he sustained against the Florida Gators today.

During today's game against the Gators, Shapen sustained a shoulder injury that will sadly end his season. He had thrown for 140 yards and a touchdown through the air while adding another touchdown on the ground before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. Michael Van Buren Jr. finished the game but could not complete the comeback as they fell 45-28.

In a statement released after the game, Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby said that the team is collectively hurting for Shapen and will support him in both his recovery, and any efforts he makes to regain a year of eligibility on a medical hardship waiver.

"We're all hurting for Blake after this unfortunate news," Lebby said. "Blake is the ultimate competitor and teammate and an unquestioned leader in our program. I know he will work incredibly hard to come back stronger than ever, and he will continue to serve as a team leader from the sidelines. We will support Blake every step of the way during his recovery process and explore all options to help him seek a medical hardship waiver to regain his lost year of eligibility."

Shapen joined the Bulldogs in 2024 after spending the first three years of his college career at Baylor. During those three seasons he completed 63.7-percent of his passes for 5,574 yards and 43 touchdowns in 27 games for the Bears.

We can only hope that Shapen is able to make a full recovery and be back on his feet in 2025.
