Meet The Cheerleading Squads Of The SEC (1:45)

No big win goes unpunished in the SEC when it comes to storming the field or the basketball court.

For the second time in just seven days, fans at Vanderbilt's Memorial Gymnastium in Nashville stormed the court after their team upset a top-10 team in the SEC. Last weekend they knocked off No. 6 Tennessee in a 76-75 thriller, and yesterday they defeated No. 9 Kentucky 74-69. Combine that with the team (understandably) storming the football field after their historic upset of Alabama in October, and that makes three instances of students and fans storming the play area in just the past four months.

Unfortunately for the Vanderbilt athletic department, those three great moments for the students will come at a cost. On Sunday, the SEC announced that Vanderbilt is being fined $500,000 for violating the conference's "access to competition area policy." That fine will go straight into the pockets of the University of Kentucky.

"The Southeastern Conference announced today that Vanderbilt University will be fined for a violation of the league's access to competition area policy due to fans entering the court following its men's basketball game against the University of Kentucky on January 25," the organization said in a statement.

"Vanderbilt will incur a fine of $500,000 for a third offense under the league's revised access to competition area policy that was adopted at the SEC Spring Meetings in 2023. Vanderbilt was cited for its first violation when its fans entered the field following a football game against Alabama on October 5, 2024 and for its second violation following a men's basketball game against Tennessee on January 18, 2025.

"For Conference contests, fines are paid to the opposing institution. In this case Vanderbilt will pay the $500,000 fine to the University of Kentucky."

Fans have decried this system for unjustly penalizing underdogs to the benefit of bigger programs, as traditionally the ones that don't win as much are significantly more likely to storm the field or court after a win over a more prosperous program.

But it simply is what it is for the time being and the SEC can't exactly allow tens of thousands of people to crowd a small area so quickly. Serious accidents can happen if they do.

What do you think the SEC should do to prevent court-storming and field-storming?
