The Nebraska Cornhuskers began the season with a 5-1 start, showing a lot of promise in head coach Matt Rhule's second season. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola appeared to live up to the hype after his lengthy recruiting saga, and the defense was much improved from the 2023 campaign.

The last few weeks have been a different story for the Huskers. They've lost three straight games to fall to 5-4 on the season, including an embarrassing loss to a two-win UCLA team on Saturday.

Nebraska has only a few more chances to earn their sixth win of the season in order to become bowl eligible, and they'll look to a coach with bowl experience to help get them there.

According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports, Nebraska has hired former West Virginia and Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen as an offensive consultant.

Holgorsen held a similar role at TCU this season following the end of his Houston tenure last season.

Holgorsen had two 10-win seasons at West Virginia, leading them to a huge 70-33 triumph over Clemson in the Orange Bowl in his first year. The Mountaineers also won 10 games in 2016 before losing to Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

After seven years and over 60 wins at WVU, Holgorsen took the job at Houston ahead of the 2019 season. His most successful campaign with the Cougars came in 2021, when he led the team to 12 wins and a victory in the Birmingham Bowl.

Nebraska is looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2016, and they'll have three chances to do it before the end of the season. The Huskers will travel to face USC in California next week, and then they'll end the season with matchups against Wisconsin and Iowa.

We'll see if Holgorsen can help the offense find the consistency that it showed through the first several weeks of the season, and if his expertise and experience can contribute to at least one more win to get them into a bowl game.

Fans can tune in to see Holgorsen's first game for Nebraska on November 16, when the Huskers take on the USC Trojans in LA.
