Aaron Rodgers was supposed to save the New York Jets. It's become pretty apparent that he's just going to be another mercenary who flopped for the franchise.

From a production standpoint, Rodgers hasn't been terrible. The former MVP is completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,442 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. When you watch the games though, you see an aging quarterback incapable of coming up clutch when the Jets need him most. Just look at the team's losses to the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.

Earlier this week, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that Jets owner Woody Johnson brought up the idea of benching Rodgers during a team meeting. His suggestion was shot down.

"After losing to Denver, Woody Johnson suggested in a contentious meeting that they bench Rodgers because he felt the QB wasn't playing well. The coaches pushed back and asked each other if he was serious," Russini said.

Though it hasn't been confirmed, Johnson might just get his wish. Russini is now reporting that Rodgers may get released by the Jets before this season even comes to an end. That would be quite the fall from grace for the future Hall of Famer.

The Jets are currently on their bye week. When they return to the facility next week, Rodgers will probably be asked about this report.

Rodgers has said that he'd like to play next NFL season. As of this moment, it's tough to envision any scenario where he suits up for the Jets in the fall of 2025.

The cap charge for Rodgers next season is $23.5 million. None of that is guaranteed, per Rich Cimini. Since there are void years on his deal though, he'll count towards the cap through the 2029 season. In other words, the Jets will feel the effects of this failed experiment for a long time.
