Prince William is "shocked" and "saddened" by the death of someone he knew in the New Orleans attack on New Year's Day.

A 42-year-old U.S. citizen drove a white truck onto a crowded Bourbon Street early on New Year's Day. The man, who has since been identified by authorities, killed 14 people and injured dozens of others. He was ultimately shot and killed by police after he opened fire on authorities.

All 14 victims of the attack have been named. Prince William and his Royal family knew one of the victims in the attack in New Orleans.

Edward Pettifer, 31, was identified as one of the victims in the attack in New Orleans. He was from London and is the stepson of the former nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

The Royal Family released an official statement on the tragic death.

"Catherine and I have been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ed Pettifer," a statement shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales' official Instagram account said.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack."

The man's family issued a statement, as well.

"The entire family are devastated at the tragic news of Ed's death in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and a friend to so many," the family said.

"We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack. We request that we can grieve the loss of Ed as a family in private. Thank you."

Our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by the awful tragedy in New Orleans on Wednesday. May all of the victims rest in peace moving forward.
