At the start of free agency, most MLB insiders thought Pete Alonso would strike a deal with the New York Mets. The latest report, however, strongly suggests that both sides are ready to go their separate ways.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets are starting to consider other options at first base. It was previously reported that Alonso was offered a three-year deal in the ballpark of $90 million. Clearly, that wasn't the offer that Alonso and his agent were looking for.

"With a gap in talks remaining, Mets are looking more seriously at other options and a return for Pete Alonso seems much less likely now," Heyman said.

This comes after Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that Alonso's market is heating up. There has been some chatter about him potentially joining the Toronto Blue Jays.

Since making his debut for the Mets in 2019, Alonso has proven to be an impactful bat. He has a .249 career average with 226 homers and 586 RBI. Though he didn't drive in as many runs this past season, he did play in all 162 games and improve his batting average from 2023.

If Alonso leaves the Mets, that would force the front office to find another power hitter to place next to Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos and Juan Soto.

Back in December, Mets owner Steve Cohen was asked about Alonso's future. He said that he'd like to sign the former Rookie of the Year at the right price.

"We think he's a great Met. We're still engaged. We hope that he stays as a Met," Cohen said. "Listen, he's entitled to go out and test his market and see what it is. And hopefully, we'll get there."

The Mets have been very busy this offseason, make no mistake about it. They even made a move earlier this Thursday, signing Jesse Winker to a one-year, $7.5 million deal.

Maybe, just maybe, Alonso and the Mets can revisit their negotiations later this offseason.
