One person has been killed and at least 16 others have been injured in a mass shooting at a college football homecoming event over the weekend.
Tuskegee University, one of the most iconic Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country, welcomed close to 50,000 people to their football stadium on Saturday, for the school's 100th homecoming celebration. Tuskegee fell to Miles, 37-7, at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium in Alabama. Tragically, later that day, a mass shooting killed at least one person and injured close to 20 other people.
The Associated Press confirmed the tragic news on Sunday afternoon.
The Associated Press had more:
An early Sunday shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama left one person dead and injured 16 others, 12 of them wounded by gunfire, authorities said.
The victim of the shooting, an 18-year-old man, was not a university student, but some of those who were injured were. No arrests were immediately announced.
Twelve people were wounded by gunfire, and four others sustained injuries not related to the gunshots, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a Sunday afternoon update.
The university released a statement on Sunday.
"The parents of this individual have been notified. Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery," the university said in a statement.
One student blamed campus security for allowing too many people on campus. There were close to 50,000 people at the football stadium on Saturday.
"Them saying that the party was unauthorized to kind of switch the blame unto us, it's crazy because even if it was an authorized party, with the security measures we have in place, the same thing could have happened," Mechel Winters told WSFA.
"I just expected it to be a safe place because we are on campus, and there should be security measures in place."
Our thoughts are with everyone involved on Sunday. May the victim rest in peace.
