The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be breaking new ground this Friday as they host the first game of the new 12-team College Football Playoff against Indiana. They'll be sporting a new look as they make history in South Bend.

Over the past 24 hours there have been rumors that the team will be unveiling a new uniform for their game against the Hoosiers. The rumors started when the team shared a social media post that said "Here Come The Irish" with white and green letters on a black background. Speculation immediately went rampant with people suggesting and outright reporting that the team will have black uniforms against Indiana.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman confirmed recent rumors that the Fighting Irish will be sporting new uniforms this Friday. But he said that he hasn't seen what they look like yet.

The reports of Notre Dame wearing black jerseys for the Indiana game has led to a mixed reaction from fans. While many are excited to see what kind of fresh look the Fighting Irish are sporting this week, the more staunch traditionalist fans can't stand seeing the team go away from their classic blue-and-gold uniforms under any circumstances:

"I'm going to say it. I'm jacked if #NotreDame is going with the black uniforms. Let's go! #GoIrish" one user on X declared.

"Again, if they came out in all dark navy blue w/ gold accents and their gold helmets that would be effectively the same thing but stick to tradition/color scheme. If they wear black I'm not going to like it (unless and until they beat the brakes off of IU)" wrote another.

"Stupid. Keep the tradition going. We aren't Oregon. Alabama and Georgia don't play these silly games, neither should we," a third wrote.

Notre Dame head into Friday's game as 7.5-point favorites over Indiana. Both teams went 11-1 in the regular season though Indiana's 11 wins all came against unranked teams while four of Notre Dame's wins were over teams that were ranked at the time.

The game will be played at 8 p.m. ET and will air on ABC.
