Norfolk State Has Message For Media After Reportedly Hiring Michael Vick

Michael Vick will begin his coaching career at Norfolk State, according to David Teel of The Virginian-Pilot. The former NFL quarterback has been linked to two job openings in the past few days.
It was previously reported that Norfolk State had a meeting with Vick. ESPN's Adam Schefter then reported that Sacramento State has interest in the former NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Apparently, the program has over $50 million to spend for NIL. That being said, ESPN is also reporting that Vick is close to finalizing a deal with NSU.
Norfolk State has not yet released a statement regarding Vick. However, the official X account for the university did post a telling message on Tuesday night.
"To all media outlets: We are Norfolk State University. NSU on second reference…and Norfolk State if you are fam," the university wrote on X.
That seems like a not-so-subtle way of addressing the Michael Vick rumors.
According to The Virginian-Pilot, NSU will introduce Vick as its new head coach within the next week. He's replacing Dawson Odums, who finished the 2024 season with a 4-8 record. In four years with the Spartans, Odums had a 15-31 record.
Even though Vick doesn't have experience as a college coach, his desire to lead a program is there. In fact, it's been burning inside him for many years.
"I feel like I've learned so much from so many great coaches over the years. You know, I don't want to bottle up a lot of knowledge, and (I) really can't relay the messages that I want to relay to a high school kid because … you don't have to dumb it down, but you can't be as complex. And I get that," Vick said in 2017. "[At the] collegiate level or professional level, you can express ideas. You can go into detail. You know you can coach hard, and that's what I want to do."
We've seen former NFL stars have success as coaches. Just look at what Deion Sanders is building at Colorado.
There's no guarantee Vick will be successful, but there'll be plenty of fans cheering him on at NSU, that's for sure.
