Communities in the southeastern part of the United States are still dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, but another deadly storm is set to follow in the coming days.
Hurricane Milton is expected to hit the western coast of Florida as a Category 4 storm, bringing dangerous levels of storm surge, high winds and other potentially hazardous elements to the region.
Tampa, affected by Helene, is in the direct path of the storm. Those living there have been urged to evacuate ahead of the storm making landfall on Wednesday, and the local NFL team issued a short statement on the storm.
"Stay safe, Florida," the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said on social media.
The team has also announced its plans for the storm, expediting their travel to New Orleans ahead of their game against the Saints this weekend.
"In advance of Hurricane Milton's expected landfall, the Buccaneers will depart Tampa on Tuesday morning," the team said.
"The team will relocate operations to the New Orleans area for the remainder of the week leading up to Sunday's game at the Saints. Media availabilities will be conducted virtually beginning on Wednesday."
Another team in the area, the Tampa Bay Rays, are offering their home stadium, Tropicana Field, as a place of refuge and a base camp for emergency personnel in the region.
"Time is running out," said Florida governor Ron DeSantis this week.
"There's no guarantee what the weather's going to be like starting Wednesday morning. You may have a window where it may be safe, but you may not. So use today as your day to finalize and execute the plan that is going to protect you and your family."
Crews that were originally dispatched to North Carolina have been sent to Florida to help clean up the debris left by the previous storm, with many of the same areas set to be affected by Milton.
As the storm approaches, we can only hope that the loss of property and casualties are as low as possible for a region that has already been hit by a devastating storm.
