Fox Sports has made a decision on Michael Strahan's status following his national anthem "controversy" this weekend.
Strahan, who covers the NFL for Fox Sports after starring in the league from 1992-2007 with the New York Giants, didn't place his hand over his heart during the national anthem on Sunday. The NFL on FOX pregame show was airing live from a U.S. Naval Base in San Diego, in honor of Veterans Day Weekend. Strahan was the lone member of the NFL on FOX crew - Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, Rob Gronkowski, Howie Long, Jay Glazer - to keep his arms at his sides during the Star Spangled Banner. But Strahan - and Fox Sports - maintain that there was no intended controversy here.
Fox Sports has decided to not punish the 52-year-old NFL star for his national anthem behavior.
A source told The Daily Mail that there "isn't going to be any type of punishment or fine going Michael's way." The source added that Fox Sports sees it as "an internet controversy."
Strahan's best friend, Jay Glazer, agrees.
"Let me tell you this, I don't know if I have a friend who is more proud of his military roots than Michael, growing up on an army base constantly talking about what he learned from his dad Major Gene Strahan and how his time there shaped him. I heard it CONSTANTLY, still do!" he wrote.
"But also, with no fanfare i personally saw him donate thousands of dollars of clothes to veterans, including many homeless veterans as well clothes for veterans to go on job interviews. I know these days people want to be angry fast but maybe first, how is THIS for a novel idea. ASK him if he's protesting something.
"When you protest you want people to know, don't ya? He was NOT, just got caught up in how beautiful the whole moment was during the anthem and didn't think about it. Ask the dude before forming an angry mob, but also maybe find out alllll he's done for our veterans over the years."
NFL fans are weighing in on FOX's decision to not punish Strahan for his behavior.
"I don't see what the big deal is. Not everyone puts their hand over their heart. He's not being disrespectful by talking or moving around," one fan wrote.
"It shouldn't be a controversy. He stood and showed respect. Let's not get so nit-picking that now we feel people need to be forced to put their hand over their heart every time," one fan added.
"Strahan didn't do anything that warranted punishment," one fan added.
"I've always liked him, and he can do whatever he wants to do. But I don't think many Americans will view him the same going forward," one fan added.
