New York Jets Cut Player Following His Arrest This Weekend

SNY/X.

When you're trying to make an NFL roster as a journeyman, it's never a good idea to get arrested during the offseason.

New York Jets cornerback Tae Hayes made the unfortunate mistake of getting picked up for a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge over the weekend, and on Monday, Gang Green cut the 26-year-old defender.

Hayes, who spent time on the Ravens' and Lions' practice squads last season before catching on with the Jets, was arrested early Sunday morning in Alabama. He was booked just before 4 a.m. and released just after 5 a.m. on $300 bond, according to police records.

An Appalachian State alum and USFL champion with the Birmingham Stallions in 2022, Hayes played in one game for the Jets last season, recording two tackles in a 20-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

For his career, he's also appeared in regular season contests with the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots.

In total, the 5-foot-9, 188-pound Hayes has recorded 18 tackles, recovered one fumble and broken up two passes in 14 NFL games. He's played 220 snaps on defense and 55 on special teams.

The Jets are coming off a 7-10 season and will open up the 2024 campaign against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, Sept. 9.
