Nebraska Quarterback Informed Coaching Staff He's Transferring

Nebraska may lose one of its freshman quarterbacks this offseason.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Daniel Kaelin plans to enter the transfer portal. He informed Nebraska's staff of his decision on Tuesday morning.
Kaelin appeared to confirm Thamel's report by retweeting the post on X.
A three-star recruit from the class of 2024, Kaelin flipped his commitment from Missouri to Nebraska in May 2023. Per 247Sports, the Bellevue native ranked as the state's No. 4 prospect and the No. 28 overall quarterback from his class.
In a scouting report submitted for 247Sports in 2023, Allen Trieu called Kaelin a "refined" recruit "who can start multiple years in college and hang around on NFL rosters."
Head coach Matt Rhule said in August that Kaelin possessed the "it" factor when predicting that he'd play in the NFL.
"He's got accuracy. He's got great feet," Rhule said of Kaelin. "He's dynamic with his feet ... His brain works so fast that he'll be a lot of fun. I think the sky's the limit for Danny."
However, Kaelin's chances of earning playing time with Rhule's program took a seismic hit when the Cornhuskers landed top recruit Dylan Raiola. Kaelin nevertheless enrolled at Nebraska.
As a true freshman, Raiola will lead the Huskers to their first bowl game in eight years. The Week 1 starter has completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 2,595 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Meanwhile, Kaelin redshirted after falling behind junior Heinrich Haarberg on the quarterback depth chart. He's yet to play for Nebraska.
As a result, Kaelin still has four years of collegiate eligibility remaining. He can seek a school with a clearer path to reps rather than remaining stuck behind Raiola for the foreseeable future.
Thamel noted that Missouri, Miami, Arizona State, Colorado, and North Carolina offered Kaelin scholarships before he chose Nebraska.
The winter transfer portal officially opens next Monday. After going 6-6 in Rhule's second year, Nebraska awaits its bowl game assignment.
