The football world loved a beloved former coach as four-time high school national champion and former Notre Dame head coach Gerry Faust passed away. Among the many to pay tribute to Faust was Mike Golic, who played for him in college.

Faust passed away this past Monday at the age of 89. He had spent many years working as a motivational speaker after his final coaching job at Akron in 1994.

Coaching at Archbishop Moeller High School from 1962 to 1980, Faust 178-23-2 with seven undefeated seasons and four national high school championships. His excellence in high school convinced Notre Dame to take a chance on him in 1981. Over his five years with the program, the results were mixed as he went 30-26-1 with two bowl game appearances and one win in the 1983 Liberty Bowl.

Golic was a captain for the Fighting Irish under Faust in 1984 and paid tribute to his late coach by sharing a two-minute tribute to him and adding the message, "Just an exceptional man!!" on X.

Fans in the comments of Golic's post also offered their condolences and well wishes to the football legend:

"I coached with a friend at LSU, Mike Haywood, that played for him at ND. He told me you'll never meet a better human being in your life than Gerry Faust. Huge loss," one user replied.

"Met him at a Catholic Men's conference near Cleveland once. He was just there to attend and not to speak. He was so kind and we had a nice chat. Loved his book as well. RIP Coach Faust," wrote another.

"I ran into him a few years back at the grocery store. What a great guy, great stories too! Everybody in the community loved him. RIP Coach," a third wrote.

"Knew him and his Family well. Nice Post Mike," a fourth said.

Faust would later coach Akron for nine years, going 43-53-3 with the Zips from 1986 to 1994.

He was inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame in 2004.

Our hearts go out to Coach Faust's family and loved ones.
