SMU and Indiana haven't done much to impress college football fans through the first two games of the College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers fell on the road against Notre Dame to open the competition on Friday night, and the Mustangs haven't put up a fight in Happy Valley against Penn State.

Fans have advocated for Alabama, Miami and South Carolina after they were left out of the Playoff, but the head coach of one other SEC team had a sarcastic message for the CFP selection committee.

"Way to keep us on the edge of our seats Committee …. Riveting," said Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, whose team finished at 9-3 and will be playing against Duke in the Gator Bowl on January 2.

The 12-team playoff has been praised for giving more teams a chance to compete for a national championship, but there are bound to be blowouts as teams face competition they're not quite equipped to meet.

The same happened in the four team playoff, as many of the semifinal matchups - and a few of the championship games - also ended in lopsided blowouts.

The College Football Playoff was created to help the sport determine an undisputed national champion, and in that manner, it has been a success.

The team that wins the national title this year will need to play three or four games against the best teams in the nation in order to get there, and that's probably the best way to crown a champion in the current landscape.

Still, as long as there's a cap on the number of teams that are selected, the teams that are left out will be upset. This year, that's Alabama, Miami, South Carolina and Kiffin's Ole Miss.

Critics of the teams who were left out have argued that their own destiny was in their hands this season, and they failed to live up to the challenge by losing three games. Other teams that performed better - even with less demanding schedules - were allowed into the competition, and things are likely to continue that way, even if the Playoff expands to a 16-team field.
