According to USC, Robinson died from complications from pneumonia in Baton Rouge. Johnson responded to his former coach's passing on social media.

Robinson coached USC from 1976 to 1982 before going to the NFL. He led the Rams to playoff appearances in six of his first seven seasons and left with a franchise-record 75 wins surpassed by Sean McVay this season.
In 1993, Robinson returned to USC. He led the Trojans to three straight bowl victories, improving his bowl record to 7-1 with the program. Robinson won five Pac-12 titles behind 24 first-team All-Americans.
Johnson, the last wide receiver selected with the No. 1 overall pick, was one of 22 first-round picks to play under Robinson at USC. The three-time Pro Bowler won a Super Bowl during his 11-year NFL career before becoming a TV analyst.
Robinson coached UNLV for six seasons and returned to USC as the athletic director. He was a senior consultant for the 2019 LSU team that won the national championship.
"Football lost a legend today," UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper said in a school statement. "Coach Robinson was revered by his players, peers, fans and co-workers. He led a wonderful life on and off the football field at so many places, including here at UNLV as both a coach and administrator. Our thoughts and prayers go out to John's family as we remember all that he did for the sport nationally and right here in Las Vegas."
