Joel Dahmen Breaks Silence After Brutal 4-Stroke Penalty

As a fan, golf sometimes provides you opportunities to see something you've never expected on the course.
Joel Dahmen's four-stroke penalty at this week's 2024 Shriners Children's Open certainly qualifies. Dahmen, one of the star's of Netflix's "Full Swing," was docked four shots during the first round at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas Thursday when it was discovered he played the first three holes with an extra club in his bag. On the fourth tee, Dahmen realized he had one more than the allotted 14 clubs in the fold.
According to PGA Tour regulations, players can not start a round with more than 14 clubs in their bag. If they start with fewer than 14, they are able to add during the round, provided they don't go over the limit.
Following the penalty, Dahmen's back-to-back pars on the opening two holes were chanted to double bogeys.
On Thursday night, the veteran golfer explained what happened during a post-round media session.
"I've been traveling out here for a long time. It's never happened before," Dahmen said.
"If you play golf long enough, weird stuff's going to happen out here."

An unfortunate 4-stroke penalty for Joel Dahmen leads to a 5-over first-round @ShrinersOpen.

Dahmen did not blame his caddie and close friend Geno Bommalie for the error, which consisted of an extra 4-iron in the bag.
"I played Tuesday and Wednesday out here. We didn't see it in there," Dahmen said.
"You just want to get so mad and you want to get mad at everything," he added. "At the same time, you've just got to keep playing golf and I didn't do a great job of that afterwards. It's tough to refocus, and I mean, I shot 1-over still if you take those penalties away, which is not good out here today. So, frustrating, disappointing. But if you play golf long enough, weird stuff's going to happen out here."
Unfortunately, Dahmen could not bounce back, withdrawing from the tournament on Friday.
