Jets Release Veteran Player Ahead Of Thursday Night Football

The 2-6 New York Jets are in desperate need of a win as they host the 6-2 Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.
The last time the Jets played on Thursday night, they demolished the New England Patriots on Sept. 19, moving to 2-1 on the season and looking like the potential AFC contender they were expected to be. Since then, New York has dropped five consecutive games, four by one score or less, to put their playoff hopes on life support. Firing head coach Robert Saleh when the team was 2-3 did not work, as the Jets are 0-3 under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich.
Ahead of tonight's game, Gang Green announced a number of personnel moves, including the release of veteran tight end Anthony Firkser. Firkser, a Manalapan, N.J. native, appeared in four games for the Jets, mostly playing special teams. He did not record a catch.
In his place, the Jets activated tight end Kenny Yeboah off injured reserve. Yeboah played in 24 games for New York over the last three seasons, catching four passes for 64 yards.
The Jets also placed defensive lineman Leki Fotu and wide receiver Allen Lazard on injured reserve and promoted kicker Riley Patterson and offensive lineman Alec Lindstrom to the 53-man roster. Patterson is replacing Greg Zuerlein as kicker for tonight's game.
A win over the AFC South-leading Texans might not do anything for the Jets long-term, but it would at least put a halt to some of the bad vibes permeating from this team over the last five weeks.
"It's a fantastic thing as far as getting the taste out your mouth," interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said about playing Thursday night following Sunday's heartbreaking loss to the New England Patriots.
"To sit on that one for six days is — I mean, it's hard enough to sit on it for one day. So I really believe it's a good thing for us right now."
Jets-Texans will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium on Amazon Prime Video, with Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit calling the action.
