A Look Into Melania Trump's Younger Years (1:35)

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville is shocked by Melania Trump's Amazon Prime documentary news.

Carville, a longtime Democratic Party strategist, sounded off on the news of Amazon Prime paying $40 million for its documentary on the soon-to-be First Lady of the United States. Melania Trump, a former model who married Donald Trump in 2005, will be taking office in late January. She previously served as the First Lady of the United States from 2017-20.

Amazon Prime is releasing a special Melania Trump documentary later this year. The documentary is being directed by Rush Hour's Brett Ratner. It's reportedly costing $40 million.

Jeff Bezos's company can afford it, obviously, but Carville is shocked by the number.

Carville believes that $40 million number is insanely high.

"You can produce a world-class documentary for $2 million. I know it," Carville said during a Thursday interview with Politicon.

"You couldn't spend $40 million on a documentary if you tried 10 times harder to do it, so where's the money going? Well, we know where the money is going," he said. "And to [Jeff] Bezos, whose worth, I don't know, $400 billion this is all chump change," he continued, referring to Amazon's founder.

Carville used one word to sum up the number: "Breathtaking."

"It's breathtaking," he added.

"And I don't know, somebody better look into this, but they could make a documentary on the history of the universe and couldn't spend $40 million."

Amazon has been linked heavily to Trump since his election. Jeff Bezos has been spending some time at Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Now, his company is paying up a ton of money for a documentary on Melania Trump.

The documentary will probably do big numbers, but is it worth $40 million?

According to James Carville, almost certainly not.
