Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky has backed conservative politicians in the past, but usually in his home nation of Canada.
Last Tuesday night though, Gretzky made his support for Republican president-elect Donald Trump clear, attending an election night party at Mar-a-Lago with his wife, son and daughter, as well as son-in-law Dustin Johnson of LIV Golf stardom. Paulina Gretzky, Johnson's wife and "The Great One's" daughter shared photos of her and the entire family at the event.
Trump Organization Executive Vice President of Development Larry Glickman also posted a number of pictures, including one with him and Gretzky together. Gretzky is wearing a white "Make America Great Again" hat.
"It has been an honor working alongside the Trump family for the past 18 years!" Glickman wrote on Instagram. "With @realdonaldtrump epic victory and second term in office, I am excited to see him continue this journey to Make America Great Again 🇺🇸 His strength and resiliency are unwavering. What an unbelievable night for our country! #Trump#TrumpGolf#47."

According to Yahoo, Janet Gretzky also posted congratulations to Trump on her personal Instagram page following her victory over Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris.
"Congratulations Mr. President Donald J Trump, You did it, You deserved it, you earned every bit of it. The world is a better place to have you as our Leader, Proud to be an American. Thank you for being such a great friend. May God keep watching over you. Love our family to yours!" she wrote.
Gretzky's decision to back Trump has sparked intense reaction from liberals and conservatives alike.
"Athletes have supported candidates since time immemorial. But *this* candidate is diametrically opposed to communities/people in the margins. That arguably the nicest hockey player in men's hockey is supporting Trump says a lot about the culture of hockey, and where it will stay," tweeted journalist Shireen Ahmed.
"#99 "The Great One" LFG," a Trump supporter commented on Glickman's post.
"REAL men endorse Trump. Example Trump fans: Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr," said one person on X/Twitter.
"One of these days, his records will become obsolete and the Hall of Fame will be filled with young stars who make his achievements look small. And all he will have to show for himself is a gambling controversy, a mediocre coaching stint, and this," another hockey fan tweeted.
Trump will be inaugurated into office for a second time on Jan. 20, 2025.
