Giants Legend 'Surprised' By Daniel Jones Fallout This Season

The Daniel Jones era in New York came to an end on Friday when the Giants released him.
Jones met with the Giants' front office and asked for his release, which the Giants granted. He had been benched for the rest of the season earlier in the week and knew that his time with them was up so he figured he'd get a head start on it.
Phil Simms, who played for the Giants during his entire NFL career (1979-1993), was surprised by the news but understands why it happened.
"I am a little surprised, but look, I understand it from both sides, I do. The injury, the money, that's one thing, but the fact that he was the fourth-string quarterback? That really bothered me just to hear that," Simms said, via WFAN Sports Radio in New York. "But I understand that also, and I'm just going to say this right off the top for all the Giants fans out there. I understand you don't like him as the quarterback, it didn't work, but the guy really was dedicated and worked hard and did all that. That's got to account for something."
Simms is right in the sense that Jones did everything he could to make his tenure with the Giants work but it wasn't meant to be. He got the Giants to the playoffs during the 2022 season but that was the only year in the six seasons that he led them to the playoffs.
Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season before the Giants try and figure out who their QB1 is for next season and beyond.
The Giants will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. ET.
