5 Sports Records That May Never Be Broken (2:45)

The New England Patriots have been one of the worst teams in the NFL this season, and they'll be selected near the top of the NFL Draft for the second year in a row.

Their miserable season in 2023 earned them the right to draft Drake Maye, and they'll look to add another top player after a dreadful 2024 campaign. The Patriots were run by first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, who had his share of controversy throughout the season.

Many coaches would, understandably, be fired after a season like the one the Patriots just had, but it seems that Mayo has earned himself another year.

A former Patriots player who is familiar with the way the organization is run spoke on the idea of firing Mayo, as some Patriots fans have advocated for over the last few weeks.

"It's crazy. I got to go up to the game Saturday, and there was 'Fire Mayo' chants in the crowd. And it's crazy to think about," said Super Bowl winner Devin McCourty in an appearance on FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams."

"I think he'll be back next year, but I would say overall in this league, you can never just say something's definite until someone comes out and says, 'this person will be back.' Like last year, when Jerry Jones came out and said, 'Mike McCarthy's going to be our head coach next year.' Like, we haven't heard that."

While McCourty said that he expected Mayo and others to return, he did add that he senses an added urgency to the way they're coaching and working with the team.

"I think there is a little bit of a sense of urgency and that edge from everybody there because a lot of those guys, they were players," McCourty added. "They were in New England. They understand how things work and how you have to have a sense of urgency and there's a standard to be met."

So far, Mayo has failed to live up to that standard. The Patriots have been rebuilding for several seasons, and that rebuild will continue after the 2024 campaign.

We'll see if Mayo still ends up with the keys when the team begins the 2025 regular season in the fall.
