President Donald Trump was an unexpected part of ESPN's halftime coverage during the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Earlier today, Trump was inaugurated at President of the United States for the second time. At some point during the day, Trump recorded a brief message to be aired on ESPN during intermission of Ohio State and Notre Dame's title matchup.
The first part of Trump's video included him talking about his inauguration and upcoming term. He ended the clip with some encouraging words to players and fans of both teams.
"This has been a historic and exciting day for our country. In recent years, our people have suffered greatly. But starting now, we're going to bring America back and make it safer, richer and prouder than ever before. We'll have a nation filled with passion, strength and exceptionalism," Trump said. "Through our power and might, we will stop wars and we will lead the world to peace. We will be respected again and we'll be admired again - admired like we haven't been in many, many years. We'll put America first, and in doing so, we'll make America great again. In less than three months since the election, you have already seen it happening. You can feel the excitement and you can see the confidence and spirit returning to our nation. Together we're going to lead our country to new heights. The golden age of America has just begun.
"To all the players and fans watching tonight, I know it's been a long and difficult journey, it's been a long and difficult season. We have two tremendous teams. Get to the game, go out and fight hard, fight fair and let the better team win. I'm going to enjoy watching it. Thank you and goodnight."
While there were some viewers who probably loved seeing Trump on their screens, others were not as enthused.
ESPN is certainly aware of the negative reactions it received, otherwise the network would not have put out a statement explaining its decision.
"With Donald Trump's Inauguration occurring on the day of the CFP National Championship, it makes sense to include a message from the President, a practice that occurs regularly during major sporting events – including earlier this month from President Biden before the Sugar Bowl," the statement read.
President Joe Biden did speak during the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, which had been postponed for one day by the terrorist attack in New Orleans.
We'll see if ESPN has any further comment on Trump's appearance tonight or if they let this brief statement do all the talking.
