The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions, but that doesn't mean they can sit around and rest on their laurels.

The offseason work has already begun, even though it was only nine days ago that Philadelphia blasted the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans. The victory ended Kansas City's hopes of a three-peat and also secured the second Lombardi Trophy in Eagles franchise history.

Last year, Philadelphia pulled off arguably the greatest offseason in NFL history, landing Saquon Barkley and Zach Baun in free agency and Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the draft, among other fine moves.

We'll have to see what they do for an encore this time around, but the offseason shuffling has already begun. On Tuesday, the Eagles announced they have released veteran offensive lineman Nick Gates.

Gates signed with the Eagles last summer and after being released at the end of training camp, rejoined the team's practice squad. He wound up appearing in nine regular season games with one start in Week 18 against his former team, the New York Giants.

An undrafted free agent out of Nebraska, Gates signed with the Giants in 2019. In four seasons with Big Blue, he appeared in 44 games and made 29 starts, playing center and guard.

Gates, 29, who resumed his NFL career after suffering a severe leg injury in Week 2 of the 2021 season, spent the 2023 campaign with the Washington Commanders. He started 10 games and played in 13 for the burgundy and gold.

Gates could win up back in Philadelphia later this offseason, or he might opt to continue his career elsewhere. Either way, he's going to be getting a Super Bowl ring for his work with the Eagles.

Philadelphia will enter the 2025 season as one of the Super Bowl favorites, a role they are embracing with a hunger for more.

"I don't know when the ring ceremony is, that's probably the last day we truly celebrate being a Super Bowl champion, and then it's back to work," Barkley said last Thursday. "Two nights ago I had trouble sleeping because I'm thinking about how I can attack the offseason."
