In 2023, New York-based attorney Joe Tacopina became a national figure while representing former U.S. President Donald Trump on various court cases. He must have been paid very well for his services because he is now in talks to purchase an historic English soccer club.

According to Matt Slater for the New York Times, Tacopina is leading a consortium bid to buy the English League Two club Tranmere Rovers F.C. Tacopina has reportedly been engaged in talks to buy the 140-year-old club for upwards of six months, but they wouldn't be the first team he's added to his portfolio.

Tacopina has been involved in the buying and selling of no less than four soccer teams in Italy over the past 14 years. He was part of an American group that bought A.S. Roma in 2011, which he then sold to buy Bologna in 2014, which he then sold to buy Venezia in 2015, which he then sold to buy SPAL in 2021.

Unfortunately for Tacopina, some of his practices as owner of his various clubs in Italy have gotten him into trouble with the national football association. Slater noted that this might be giving the English Football Association pause to approve his takeover of the Tranmere Rovers.

If Tacopina is able to secure the takeover of the Tranmere Rovers though, the expectation is he will be able to use his substantial connections and financial ties to lift the club out of the fourth tier of English soccer and closer to the second tier, possibly even getting it close to the first tier.

Tranmere Rovers have never played in the first division of English soccer.
