Not even a respected newspaper is above trolling the Dallas Cowboys.

Detroit hosts the 2024 NFL Draft, a three-day event starting Thursday night. The morning before Round 1, the Detroit Free Press took an unproved shot at "America's Team."

"PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: With the football world descending upon Detroit today for the #NFLDraft, including fans of all 32 NFL teams, this is a great opportunity to remind Dallas Cowboys fans that the Detroit Lions have been to more NFC championship games this millennium," the publication wrote on social media.

Ouch. But also accurate.

The Cowboys have not played in a conference championship game since defeating Brett Favre's Green Bay Packers on Jan. 14, 1996. They beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win their third Super Bowl in a four-year window.

Dallas remains one of the most popular sports teams in the United States because of its past success. However, the Cowboys haven't sniffed those heights in decades.

Last season looked like a golden opportunity for the Cowboys to snap their conference-title drought, but they lost in the first round to the Packers instead. They've won three playoff games over the last 14 seasons.

On the other hand, the Lions have spent the 21st century as the NFL's laughingstock. That changed when they won the NFC North with a 12-5 record, despite a controversial call costing them a victory at Dallas in December.

Detroit hadn't won a playoff game in 32 years before defeating the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, the Lions squandered a chance to make their first Super Bowl appearance when blowing a 24-7 lead to the San Francisco 49ers.

Both NFC teams will attempt to fortify their rosters for a championship run during the draft.
