Deion Sanders Has 1-Word Reaction To Surprise NFL Firing

Deion Sanders was one of the many people surprised by the NFL's latest executive firing.
On Tuesday morning, the Tennessee Titans announced they were parting ways with general manager Ran Carthon after only two seasons. Tennessee went 3-14 in 2024 after a 6-11 showing in 2023, but some felt Carthon was given a raw deal and shouldered with too much blame that should have gone to his predecessor Jon Robinson. The Titans also announced they are keeping head coach Brian Callahan for a second season and that president of football operations Chad Brinker will lead the search for Carthon's replacement.
On X/Twitter, Sanders, who surely has gotten to know Carthon over the years, had a brief, but blunt, reaction to the news.
"WOW!" he wrote.
Carthon, 43, spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers leading their pro and later player personnel departments before becoming Tennessee's GM in 2023.
The former University of Florida and Indianapolis Colts running back also was the director of player personnel for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams from 2012-16 and got his career started as a scout with the Atlanta Falcons in 2011.
"We just haven't improved this football team for the last couple of years," said Titans President and CEO Burke Nihill in a statement. "We've won nine of the 34 games we've played over the past two seasons, and as much as the record was concerning to [owner] Amy [Adams Strunk] as it was to all of our fans, her assessment was also that we're not on course to get where we need to go moving forward. As difficult as these decisions are, she believed it was the right one."
Tennessee is now the second franchise with an opening at GM in this hiring cycle, along with the New York Jets. The Titans also have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft after beating out the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, who also finished 3-14.
