If ABC was trying to stir up some controversy for its upcoming season of "Dancing with the Stars," the network easily accomplished that goal.

It was revealed this week that Anna Sorokin will be a contestant on the new season of the popular dance show. Why is that a big deal? Well, she was convicted of swindling banks, hotels and even friends back in 2019.

Sorokin built a reputation for herself as a German heiress named Anna Delvey. She was eventually released from prison in February 2021.

Now that a few years have passed, Sorokin will have a chance to reintroduce herself to the world on "Dancing with the Stars."

That being said, it doesn't sound like Sorokin will receive a warm welcome from those watching "Dancing with the Stars." In fact, most of them believe it's ridiculous that she's allowed to be on the show.

"It seems to me that the newest route to fame, fortune, and celeb status is to be a criminal," one person said. "WHY do we keep encouraging our youth to achieve stardom via prison time?"

Another person tweeted, "Only in America."

"America has a sweet spot for the right kind of criminals," a third person wrote.

Whoopi Goldberg heavily criticized this decision during Thursday's episode of "The View." For the most part, her colleagues agreed with her.

"I think back to all the families who've had family members arrested by ICE, who have gone to the courts to get their dad, or their brother, or their mother back, and this woman, they gave her permission to go do this," Goldberg said, via The Hollywood Reporter. "Now, should I think there's a reason? Is there a two-tiered system here with ICE?"

The newest season of "Dancing with the Stars" will begin on Sept. 17. It'll be available for people to watch on ABC and Disney+.
