Meet The Star Of The Dallas Cowboys Cheer Squad (1:14)

Brian Schottenheimer has reportedly landed two key additions to his Dallas Cowboys staff.

The Cowboys introduced Schottenheimer as their new head coach on Monday. He'll replace Mike McCarthy after spending the last two seasons as Dallas' offensive coordinator. While the Cowboys have yet to find his replacement for that role, Schottenheimer will call the plays on offense.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are close to hiring their other coordinators. Dallas is nearing deals to install Matt Eberflus as its defensive coordinator and Nick Sorensen as special teams coordinator.

The Chicago Bears fired Eberflus before he could complete his third season as head coach. Under his watch, the team went 14-32 and lost his last six games.

Eberflus inherited a defense that traded Khalil Mack before his arrival and moved Roquan Smith during the 2022 season. The Bears allowed an NFL-worst 27.2 points per game that year, but they improved to 22.3 in 2023 and 21.8 last season.

Late-game mismanagement proved a constant theme of Chicago's 2024 season, but Eberflus will no longer have those responsibilities.

Before coaching the Bears, Eberflus spent four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator. They finished no worse than 16th in yards allowed, ranking eighth in a 2020 campaign that saw the organization's last playoff appearance.

A ferocious Cowboys defense succumbed to several significant injuries last season. Mike Zimmer's unit allowed the second-most points (27.5) for a team that missed the playoffs after three straight 12-5 finishes.

Meanwhile, Sorensen spent the 2024 season as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator. Elevated from defensive pass-game specialist to replace Steve Wilks, the 49ers ranked eighth in total defense for the second straight year but sunk from third to 29th in points allowed.

Sorensen previously won a Super Bowl as a special teams assistant for Pete Carroll's Seattle Seahawks. He ended his eight-season tenure coaching defensive backs before becoming the Jacksonville Jaguars' special teams coordinator in 2021.
