Cowboys Appear To Make Decision On Mike McCarthy For 2025 Season

The Dallas Cowboys have been fairly quiet about their coaching situation for the 2025 season. Moments ago, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero provided an update on Mike McCarthy's future.
McCarthy is not under contract for the 2025 season. He does, however, have an exclusive negotiating window with the Cowboys that runs through Jan. 14. Earlier this week, the Chicago Bears requested permission to speak with him. That request was shot down by "America's Team." Once that was reported by the media, many people assumed that Dallas would sign McCarthy to a new deal.
Although an extension hasn't been worked out yet, the latest report from Pelissero is quite telling. As of right now, McCarthy and the Cowboys are "open to moving forward together." Basically, they'll discuss a new contract before his exclusive negotiation rights window expires.
"After several days of discussions about the 2024 season and the future, #Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Mike McCarthy remain open to moving forward together and the sides are expected to open talks today on a new contract to keep him in Dallas," Pelissero said. "There have been no negotiations yet and still are other issues to work through. McCarthy's contract is set to expire Tuesday, giving Dallas a few more days to work out a deal. Otherwise, McCarthy would be free to pursue other opportunities."
McCarthy has been coaching the Cowboys since 2020. His record as the head coach in Dallas is 49-35. The franchise has been to the playoffs three times with him at the helm.
Following the team's loss in Week 18, McCarthy made it clear that he'd like to remain the head coach of the Cowboys.
"I have a lot invested here, and the Cowboys have a lot invested in me," McCarty said. "And then there's a personal side to all these decisions. So, they all point in the right direction."
If the Cowboys can't work out a deal with McCarthy, the Bears could potentially swoop in and secure an interview with him. The New Orleans Saints have also been mentioned as a possible suitor for the Super Bowl-winning coach.
